Mani Monday: Anti Valentine’s Day Nails

I hate Valentine’s Day. I’ve been in a long-term relationship for about 12 years, and married for almost four and a half of those. You would think because of that, Valentine’s Day would be one of my favorite days of the year, right? Not at all. I think it’s residual bitterness I have from being the only single friend throughout high school, when having a Valentine was a status symbol. I thought I’d switch up the Valentine’s Day nails this year to reflect that side of me a bit more:

Here are a few more anti-Valentine’s Day manis for those looking to take a different approach, as well!

Valentine’s Day Nails

It’s no secret that I’m a DIY nail art junkie. Lately I’ve been turning to Etsy to help satisfy my addiction with nail stickers.  The latest batch comes from the Cover It In Vinyl shop where I purchased Valentine’s Day nail stickers in the shapes of filled hearts, hollow hearts, keys, love, and xoxo letters. The shop provided options of colors to purchase them in, and I opted for white since I was planning a red and hot pink nail scheme.  Best part? For a total of 60 (good quality, I might add) stickers, it costs a minimal $4.00! Stock up, kids!

Here’s my final outcome:

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas

I just called my husband with the perfect idea for a Valentine’s Day gift: Tickets to NBA All-Star Saturday Night. It’s something we’ve talked about doing for as long as I’ve known him, and though tickets are super-expensive, I thought now would be the best time in our lives to drop this kinda of cash because, A) It’s right here in NYC, B) We don’t have a mortgage to worry about just yet, and C) No kids and all the expenses that come with it. Both B and C will likely change soon, so I thought, Carpe Diem! But my financially responsible husband shut it down, which got me thinking about last-minute gifts. Yikes!  I gave it some thought and came up with my top three:

Dollar Shave Club Membership:

There’s no doubt about it, dudes are obsessive when it comes to their razors and what they are shaving their faces with. What better way to show you understand their neuroses than to buy into it…Literally!  Pick out a razor, choose some additional products, and like magic it will appear at his door step every month!

Amazon Instant Video Gift Card

Let’s be honest, sometimes Netflix just doesn’t cut it, and your S.O. is too cheap to rent anything online since you already pay for Netflix. Put his mind at ease and get an Amazon Instant Video Gift Card so you guys can watch what you want, when you want.

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, so why not take him to that restaurant he’s been dying to try but never had the opportunity to go?  Valentine’s Day is the perfect holiday to do that!

Honorable Mention: Massage

It’s a little “cheap” since you’re not purchasing anything, but giving massages is hard work, and at no real benefit to you. It’s a great way to show your man you care about him without breaking the banks, and of course spending quality time together!

Valentine’s Day Fashion Bummer

I live in New York City and as you may know we have been hit by mountains of snow.

All if this snow makes it next to impossible to get dressed, none the less, dress cute. I had my Valentine’s Day ensemble all set: a cute sweater dress, red lips, and of course my staple Eiffel Tower Tiffany’s necklace. I even rocked some adorable midi rings and red nails to top off the look:

When I got dressed I thought to myself, “You know what I’m missing? My disgusting lime green rain boots!”

Just kidding. I wasn’t aching to wear them by any means. They are hideous and extremely heavy on my feet, but they are a staple in this weather. I always plan to buy a new pair, but why waste my money on something I know I still won’t like, and still find uncomfortable? Besides, whenever I wear these, I have a great opportunity to make fun of my mom, sharing the quote she said about them when she gave them to me, complete with her Brooklyn accent:

Law! They’re Ralph Lauren and were only 15 dollas from TJ Maxx!

Love + Flowers

I thought a post about my love for flowers would make the most sense on a day like Valentine’s Day.

It all started with wedding planning. Flowers were my favorite part of the planning process, and in doing my flower research on Style Me Pretty (Pinterest had only just been launched, and I was unaware of its presence, huge bummer!) I fell in love with white and black anemones.  My color theme was light pink, and I really wanted touches of black so it didn’t look completely like a baby shower for a girl – and thought these would be perfect!

To my disappointment, my florist told me how fragile these flowers are, so much so that two bouquets would need to be made, one for pictures, and one for the ceremony. As much as I loved them, I knew it wasn’t a smart decision to do that, so I had my backup plan – white and black gerbera daisies!  They did the trick in my bridesmaids bouquets and in my Chuppah. My florist even wrapped my girls’ bouquets in white and black tulle for the perfect finishing touches!

My husband, being the good egg that he is, sent my Valentine’s Day flowers to work Tuesday of this week so that I would have the entire week to enjoy them, since we have a three day weekend coming up, they would likely be dead by the time I get back to the office:

My love of flowers runs deep, so much so, that for our first wedding anniversary, my husband surprised me with a delivery of 100 roses to my office!

Happy Valentine’s Day! I know it’s really just another day, but if you’re celebrating today, enjoy!
