Wedding Wednesday: Engagement Photos

This past weekend, a Maryland couple’s engagement photos went viral because they had an adorable e-sesh in the middle of Winter Storm Jonas. First glance at this story you might think that the couple had this date set and just decided to move forward with the shoot anyway. Nope! The couple knew that they wanted their photos in a snowstorm, and luckily their photographer was on board:

Engagement photos allow for couples to show who they really are – let their personality shine through. It’s not only fun and allows for you and your fiance to have non-wedding professional photos, but according to The Knot, it’s important to also get a feel of your wedding day photographer and get a sneak peek of the work that’s yet to come.

The Knot also advises couples to pick out a location of value – like a first date spot, park, college campus – it will not only make for a great keepsake, but will put you more at ease in a familiar environment.

My husband and I met in undergrad at SUNY Purchase – a small state school in Westchester, New York, about an hour north of NYC. It was a no-brainer for us to go back to “the scene of the crime,” so to speak, and have our photos taken there. We went all over the campus, but our favorite was the school gym where we both spent plenty of time – him as a basketball player, and myself on the dance team (yes, I danced at his basketball games). To me, these images not only represent our engagement, but bring back so many fond memories of when we first met.

Here’s a round up of other fun engagement shoots to inspire you for yours!

Engagement Season!

With Christmas just days away, and New Year’s a week away, it is safe to say that engagement season is in full swing!

A few years ago I went with Steve, his cousin and her son to go ice skating at Rockefeller Center. We must have waited on line in the freezing cold for two hours. I remember one of the sessions ending, and everyone was clearing the ice, except for one man, who was down on one knee in front of New York City to propose to his girlfriend. It was so amazing to see – I thought this is what Christmas in New York is about!  As time passed, and we were still on line, and even when we finally were ice skating, the number of men dropping to their knees exponentially increased.  The thrill for me wore off, but never-the-less, it’s really magical to see couples embracing the season.

With engagement season underway, I rounded up some of my favorite styles of engagement rings!

Let’s start with a traditional princess cut solitaire. I’m partial to this since it’s exactly what I have:

I love a good cushion cut with a pave band that really adds a touch of elegance:

I go back and forth on the halo look.  I think if it’s really done right, it’s super classy, like this one. Personally, if the halo is too thick, I think it looks a bit cheap:

Lastly, there’s something about a double band that I adore:

Jackie + Kelso 4ever

The cutest couple in Hollywood, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, aka Jackie and Kelso from That 70s Show, have officially taken the next step in their relationship and are engaged! Rumor has it they are eager to walk down the aisle sooner than later, so why not start envisioning what Kunis might wear?

She’s one of the many ladies in Hollywood who will look good in anything, but for some reason, a Grecian inspired dress comes to mind for her. Here are some options the future Mrs. Kutcher would look unforgettable in!

This one’s my fave:

Brooch, Smooch

I adore a good brooch.

This concept of a brooch is a bit new for me. It began a few years ago, when my aunt gave me one of my grandmother’s opal brooches. She knows that I love opals because they are my birthstone and figured I would get the most use out of it than anyone else in the family.

I was kind of puzzled. I was super excited to get it, but I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. Being in my mid-twenties at the time, and at a job where jeans were the norm, I didn’t think I would ever really have the chance wear it.

When blazers started making a comeback, and when I was brave enough to buy one that didn’t make me feel old or butch, it dawned on me that I could pin it on the lapel.

Since then, there has been no turning back. I’ve been wearing that opal brooch on every lapel that ever touched me. I never felt the need to get a new one, since the one I have has such sentimental value to it. But, a few months ago, November 8th to be exact, I did find a beautiful Eiffel Tower brooch on Etsy. The Eiffel Tower is another thing that holds a special place in my heart as it is where my husband proposed to me. I didn’t think twice, I bought it.

Although I love it, I couldn’t bring myself to wear it right away. I couldn’t imagine replacing grandma’s pin. This past week was the first time I wore it. It was a nice change, and it added a pop of color to my gray and black ensemble, which made it easier to wear. I’m looking forward to adding it into my rotation.
